Education campaigner Malala Yousafzai has turned 18, and marked the day by opening a school for Syrian girls in an informal refugee settlement in Lebanon’s Beka’a Valley.

Malala was attacked by the Taliban in her native Pakistan in 2012 because of her campaign for girls’ education.

In her speech at the school, funded by the Malala Fund, she criticised world leaders for “failing” Syrian refugees, especially Syrian children.

The BBC’s Lyse Doucet travelled there with Malala, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014.
